Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Science
The Bachelor of Science Honour’s degree programme is an undenominated Science Degree of four Years duration. This degree allows you to complete a variety of science subjects in Year one prior to selecting a specialised honour’s degree to study from Years two to four. So if you are know you want to do a Level 8 science degree, but you cannot make up your mind now, then this is a good choice for you! The programme allows students to study for a degree in science without selecting a final honour’s degree until Year 2 and is thus an excellent option for students who wish to retain flexibility of choice.
The undenominated Science Honour’s Degree builds a core foundation in key science disciplines in the first Year of study. The course emphasises practical laboratory experience for students and is delivered in the new MacMunn Science building at IT Sligo.
The subjects studied in Year one include core Science modules in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Information Technology and Learning to Learn. Students also select elective subjects based on Honour’s Degree paths within the School of Science. The Honour’s Degree courses that students may select at Year 2 are:
BSc Honours Environmental Science with Ecology
BSc Honours Occupational Safety and Health
BSc Honours Medical Biotechnology
BSc Honours Pharmaceutical Science with Drug Development
The course particularly encourages critical thinking skills in students and this aspect of your education will ensure your ongoing professional career and lifelong learning development. Their skills profile will equip graduates for a diverse range of key environmental, health and safety, med biotech or pharma roles in industry, local authorities, public sector agencies, or in research and development. Graduates will also be well equipped to progress onto research degrees at MSc and PhD level cognate to their honour’s degree. Numerous government reports have indicated that in order for the “Knowledge Economy” to develop in Ireland a critical requirement is the education of science graduates with key sectoral skills. By joining this degree you can make your own choices in Year 2 and find employment that suits you.
