IT Sligo Lean Six Sigma ‘MOOC’ Summer 2020

IT Sligo has been running an award-winning MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on “Introduction to Lean Sigma Quality” since 2012. The programme is a FREE 7-week course delivered 100% online. So far over 10,000 students have taken the course from over 50 countries.
Lean Six Sigma has been around for more than two decades and since then it has been embraced by leading global companies in the manufacturing and service industries. It has become the foremost process improvement approach for organisations that wish to attain world class performance in quality and customer satisfaction. The tools and techniques are now expanding to the healthcare and government sectors where benefits have been achieved in productivity, efficiency and elimination of ‘waste’ – a term used in Lean Sigma quality which refers to anything that does not add value to the product or service. On this course, the following topics will be addressed:
• Introduction to Lean and ‘waste’ elimination
• Lean Tools
• Error Proofing (poka-yoke)
• 5S and Visual Factory
• Introduction to Six Sigma and variation reduction
• Six Sigma DMAIC problem solving methodology
• 7 Quality Tools

There are approx. 1.5 to 3 hours of course content and activities each week depending on your prior knowledge of Lean Six Sigma. There are recorded video lectures along with a quiz to complete each week.
The course starts with an introductory week commencing on May 4th, 2020 and runs until June 28th, 2020.

Remote Work Ready & Leading Remote Teams

In response to both the current COVID 19 pandemic and the future remote working opportunity, LOETB, in collaboration with IDA Ireland, SOLAS and Grow Remote, have created two new online national training programmes that develop the capability and capacity of those wishing to become Remote Workers, current Remote Workers and Line Managers nationally.
Remote working is now!
The potential business benefits of Remote Working have been acknowledged for some time – enhancing the ability to attract and retain top talent, contributing to a more contented and productive team, and lowering the cost base. Remote working can contribute to regional development through sustainable rural communities, while also addressing inclusion and diversity in workforces by removing some barriers to work. It also offers companies and employees the opportunity to focus on output rather than attendance, while building resilience and business continuity.
Remote Work Ready is aimed at employees and unemployed people hoping to transition to a remote working role and is fully funded.
Leading Remote Teams is aimed at Line Managers leading a team that includes remote workers. Note the managers time commitment to the programme will represent the entire company contribution to programme costs.
Both programmes are 100% online, available nationally and are of 7 weeks duration, (with additional time allocated to facilitate completion of ICDL in Remote Work Ready and for submission of assessment material in Leading Remote Teams).

The COVID-19 pandemic is challenging many businesses across Ireland and the world. Businesses have had to innovate and adapt with to be able to cope through these times of uncertainty.

The Cabinet Committee on COVID-19 has approved a National Action Plan. The plan has been prepared following involvements from all departments and key agencies.
Its main aims are to:
Minimise the risk of people becoming unwell
Minimise the health, wellbeing and social impact for people who may be at greater risk
Reduce the economic and social disruption associated with the COVID-19 outbreak
The plan includes information on:
What we know about the COVID-19 virus
What the public can do to reduce the threat
The public health led approach being taken
Supports for vulnerable people in society
Measures to ensure continuity of essential services
Measures to protect vital supply chains
The Health Service Executive (HSE) is implementing a wide range of measures that are unprecedented in their scale and speed in order to face the enormous challenges that COVID-19 will pose in the coming weeks. The plan will continue to evolve as the situation evolves. Implementation will continue to be overseen by the Cabinet Committee, which is supported by a Senior Officials Group, and continues to act on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer and the National Public Health Emergency Team.

Also included is an Innovation Centre Business, ‘Inner Compass‘ which operates their business from the Innovation Centre at IT Sligo, supports people struggling with low mental wellbeing, be that anxiety, low mood or toxic stress. They provide a coaching intervention, which comprises six one-hour, one-on-one sessions, over a period of 3 months. In this difficult and challenging times, Inner Compass is providing their service on-line and free of charge.

Bright Spark Entrepreneurial Summer Camp 2019

IT Sligo’s Innovation Centre will run a free Young Entrepreneur International Summer Camp for 20 second level students in July.
The summer camp is primarily aimed at transition year students from the region, aged 14 to 17 years.
The course will run from Monday – Friday, July 24 – 28th, from 9am to 6pm (except Friday – 10am to 1pm).
Participation is free and lunch /refreshments are provided each day.
The IT Sligo International Entrepreneur Summer Camp will help second level students to develop ideas and present them to a panel of judges at the end of the summer camp. The programme will cover a range of topics including idea generation and commercialisation, and will involve workshops, lectures, guest speakers, practical exercises and field trips.
It will be delivered in the Institute’s Innovation Centre in partnership with Native Speaker – an international language school which has extensive experience of running summer camps. It is based at the Institute’s Innovation Centre, and will bring an international flair to the programme with a mix of both Irish and visiting Italian students working together to advance their entrepreneurial skills.
“This innovative camp will help stimulate the creation and dynamic development of business ideas, helping participants develops creative confidence, entrepreneurial thinking and leadership skills in an international setting working with our Italian visitors,” explains Janette Gillen, Innovation Centre Manager at IT Sligo.
The programme is part of a national initiative announced earlier this year by the Minister for Education & Skills Richard Bruton, and is funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

Innovation Showcase Highlights Need For More Female Entrepreneurs

Enterprise Ireland Chief Executive Julie Sinnamon says that much work remains to be done to encourage more women to start businesses and become entrepreneurs — though Ireland is leading the way.
Ms. Sinnamon was guest speaker at a major Regional Innovation Showcase at IT Sligo, attended by business owners, startups and key support and development agencies.
In a keynote address to more than 200 invited guests, Ms Sinnamon said that a subject ‘close to my heart’ was the relatively small numbers of female business owners.
She said: “The lack of female entrepreneurs is a big problem. It is a global problem not just an Irish problem. Only 8pc of tech entrepreneurs globally are female. The women and men in the room today will know that this has got nothing to do with talent.
“We really need to focus on that. Up to 2011, 7pc of our startups were female led, last year it was 22pc so we are leading the field. Certainly, in every country I go to, it is now being raised as an issue, in how we are succeeding in being three times more successful at developing female tech entrepreneurs? It is being done by addressing the issues and putting a specific spotlight on successes.”
Ms Sinnamon went on to underline Enterprise Ireland’s commitment to regional entrepreneurship and development and urged businesses not to wait until Brexit officially happens but to prepare for it now.
She said that although the UK remained Ireland’s number one market, it showed the importance of “not putting all the eggs in one basket” and that businesses needed to develop other markets.
IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT (LYIT), in partnership with Enterprise Ireland’s New Frontiers Programme, hosted the showcase at IT Sligo’s Hume Hall.
Ms Sinnamon congratulated companies that successfully completed the 2016 New Frontiers programme and heard pitches from a selection of innovative businesses.
Dr Brendan McCormack, President of IT Sligo, said: “Our Innovation Showcase highlights the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit of the North West. In the face of many challenges we are strongly promoting self-reliance and regional business development. The New Frontiers Programme has been hugely successful in stimulating innovation and job creation and is crucial component in the North West’s economic development.”

“However, we live in uncertain times and Brexit will prove a challenge for many regional enterprises. Despite the uncertainty, the UK continues to be Ireland’s main trading partner and it is for that reason that innovation is at the heart of Enterprise Ireland’s strategy, helping businesses to secure and maintain competitive advantage.
“We are encouraging SMEs to take the first step of preparation for Brexit by conducting their own assessment of areas of potential risk and opportunity and to develop a plan of action in response.”

Innovation Centre Companies Showcase Their Business Story Over Breakfast

The diversity and entrepreneurship of start-up companies at IT Sligo’s Innovation Centre were showcased at a special event for staff of the Institute on Thursday morning.
The Innovation Centre Breakfast Briefing invited the college’s academic and support staff to meet and network with 20 of the Innovation Centre’s dynamic start-up businesses.
Each company made a two-minute presentation, telling their story and explaining what they do, to spark interest amongst Institute staff in potential collaborations.
The businesses are in various stages of development – from idea stage to trading.
Trojan Battery – one of the world’s leading manufacturer of deep-cycle batteries and a battery technology pioneer, having built the first golf car battery in 1952
Studybundles – developers of a mobile app for higher education institutions which is designed to drive student engagement, enhance recruitment and boost retention
Storylab – a national PR and content agency, rooted in the culture of quality journalism
And KudosHealth – a software provider for large employers which enables them to engage and reward their employees all year round for being physically active & leading a healthier lifestyle.
“One of the challenges arising from the continuing expansion and growth of IT Sligo in recent years can be in ensuring that the various functions of the Institute are aware of what else is happening on campus,” explains Niall McEvoy, Head of Innovation at IT Sligo. “So, this event, organised by our Innovation Centre staff, provides an ideal opportunity for our start-up companies and staff of the Institute to explore and collaborate across areas of mutual interest.”
The keynote presentation of the breakfast briefing was made by David Kenny, site lead of Overstock Ireland – an online discount retailer based in Salt Lake City, Utah that began its Irish operations at IT Sligo’s Innovation Centre. The company has since expanded and relocated to Sligo town centre, creating 25 software development jobs locally.
“Starting and growing our business in IT Sligo’s Innovation Centre provided all the supports we needed to scale quickly. We worked with the computing department which provided student placements to help us grow. I’m delighted that half of our staff came to us directly from IT Sligo. We are now based in Sligo providing specialist software and services to our Headquarters in the US.”
Dr Brendan McCormack, President of IT Sligo, was among the staff members who attended Thursday’s event. “Entrepreneurship is the lifeblood of the economy and it is the lifeblood of IT Sligo’s dynamic Innovation Centre,” Dr McCormack said.
“For 28 years, the Centre has been a shining light in the region, a benchmark for excellence, one that is supported and nurtured by the Institute.
“The development, sustainability and success of SMEs are particularly important in regional areas. We have to have the ability to grow and sustain our own companies and to see them scale.”
Part of the Innovation Centre’s strategy is regional development and the creation of good quality, highly-skilled jobs. The number of jobs the companies create – 82 at the latest count – means the Innovation Centre is currently at full capacity.
An application has been made to Enterprise Ireland to double the capacity of the Innovation Centre, using concepts based upon the latest designs for such centres.

Sligo SME Lands UK University Contract For Student App

A small Irish start-up has signed a contract with The University of Manchester to develop a wellbeing mobile application for the institution’s 40,000 students and 10,000 staff members.
StudyBundles, which is headquartered at IT Sligo’s Innovation Centre, also has an office in Manchester, less than a mile from the University’s Oxford Road campus.
The innovative new software will utilise the latest native app technologies, building on the success of StudyBundles’ established CampusConnect product, which is already helping boost student enrolments for a number of leading Irish universities.
The company has also just signed a new contract to provide the CampusConnect app at Limerick IT and recently renewed its deals with the University of Limerick, Maynooth University and Letterkenny IT. StudyBundles is currently in talks with several other UK and Irish institutions on providing them with CampusConnect.
Two of the company founders — Declan Sweeney and John O’Hagan — spent several years living in Manchester and London before returning home to the West of Ireland to set up StudyBundles.
Declan and the third co-founder, Daniel Hinkley, were both lecturers before setting up the business and are “also former students at the University of Manchester. Daniel runs the company’s Manchester office.
The bespoke wellbeing app, developed for the University of Manchester, is an extension of StudyBundles’ CampusConnect app.
With advanced personalisation features, push notifications and geolocation functionality, the app will serve individual users with information tailored to them.
Details of wellbeing events and activities on campus and in and around the local area will be delivered according to user preferences, alongside real-time information about what is happening close by.
The University of Manchester is the largest single-site university in the UK and has the biggest student community of around 40,000 students and has 10,000 staff.
Declan Sweeney, StudyBundles CEO and co-founder said: “The University of Manchester is one of the most prestigious in the UK and this project is something we are really pleased to be involved in. This is major validation for us as a young business and an opportunity to build on the success of our core product, CampusConnect. The fact that Dan (Hinkley) and I are Manchester graduates makes this all the more pleasing and we’re excited to get started.”
StudyBundles, an Enterprise Ireland client, was founded in 2015 by lecturers Declan Sweeney, Daniel Hinkley and motion graphic designer John O’Hagan. The team was working as lecturers in London and Manchester when they came up with the idea for the business.
New Education & Training Resource For Employers

A new online resource, designed to help employers in the North West of Ireland connect more easily with the education and training services available in the region, was launched at Institute of Technology, Sligo last Friday.
The new Employer Services Page is a collaboration with the North West Regional Skills Forum.
The new online portal provides clear and accessible information for employers on a range of services which are being offered by IT Sligo.
These include: bespoke work based learning programmes, student work placements, research collaborations and key information on apprenticeships.
“Understanding the different types of providers, courses and services available across the further and higher education and training sectors can be challenging for employers,” says Oran Doherty, who is the North West Regional Skills Forum manager.
“This online platform aims to make it easier for employers to connect with the Education and Training services available to them.”
The North West Regional Skills Forum was established in 2015 as part of the Government’s National Skills Strategy. It provides an opportunity for employers and the education and training system to work together to meet the emerging skills needs of their regions
It aims to be a single contact point for the region’s employers, to help them connect with the range of services and supports available across the education and training system.
The Forum also provides a structure for employers to become more involved in promoting employment roles and opportunities for career progression in their sectors
Welcoming the new online initiative, Dr Brendan McCormack, President of IT Sligo said: “It is my strong belief that this education/industry collaboration provides some of the key enabling mechanisms to unlocking the true potential of the North West Region.
“We have an opportunity to build a vibrant economy here – and we must take advantage of that opportunity. Ensuring that the region’s employers have all the education and training tools at their disposal is one of the steps towards achieving that goal.”

New Regional Skills Forum Resource For Employers

IT Sligo in association with the North West Regional Skills Forum will launch the new Employer Services webpage in Hume Hall, IT Sligo on Friday November 25th, from 10am to 11:30am.
Employers should find this event beneficial, as it will provide key information on engaging in initiatives such as:
- Bespoke Work Based Learning programmes for their existing staff & available funding
- Secure IT Sligo students for placement periods at no / little cost
