Lecturer in Human Biochemistry in the Dept Health and Nutritional Sciences as well as head of the Cellular Health and Toxicology Group. Has published numerous peer-reviewed papers and has been previously awarded research funding by Science Foundation Ireland, InvestNI, Irish Higher Education Authority, Irish Research Council, IT Sligo seed fund, the Radiowave Therapy Research Institute and Sligo Hospital Oncology Unit Trust. Current research interests include: Developing a personalized medicine platform in the evaluation of novel anti-leukaemia compounds; Developing novel biomarkers for athletic training and over-training; Identifying mitochondrial predictive biomarkers for future onset of skin cancer and sunlight damage; Determining the role of mitochondria in skin cancer onset and sunlight induced skin ageing and damage; Innovative in vitro analysis of novel anti-tumour drugs; Developing the potential of radiowaves as a stand-alone and adjunct cancer therapy. Was awarded a prestigious SFI Stokes Lectureship in IT Sligo that he took up in late 2008 that enabled him transfer to IT Sligo from DIT and set up a new research centre. Was awarded an Arnold Graves Scholarship from DIT in 2001 to develop primary aquatic cell culture in the Radiation & Environmental Science Centre, where he stayed until 2008. He first became a Principal Investigator Researcher in 2002 in DIT as his research interests progressed into Ionising and Non-Ionising Radiation Biology. Joined the Conway Institute in UCD in 2000, as a Post Doctoral Researcher analysing the neural effects of MDMA analogues in rat brain He received his primary degree in Biochemistry from Trinity College Dublin in 1995 and PhD from UCD in 2001, where he was awarded a UCD open-post graduate scholarship in 1998.
