I always had an interest in science growing up. As I got older, I watched programmes like CSI, Criminal Minds and various true crime documentaries. This is where I fell in love with the mystery and science behind forensics. When it came to choosing my university course, I knew ATU Sligo had a brilliant science department. Graduates I know from home had talked about the amazing labs and facilities. When I read about the Forensic Investigation and Analysis degree, I knew this I what I wanted to study.

I love the forensic element of my studies. For example, in first year we went to a shooting range and carried out tests for gun shot residue. In third year we took part in a mock crime scene scenario and had to analyse, collect relative evidence and investigate what happened. The crime scene was based on a real life crime that took place and we worked with members of the Garda Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The science behind it all is so interesting too! When we get to the lab, we can see how the theory we learnt in class is applied in real life.

The degree is so much fun and the experiments we carry out are so interesting. 50% of the degree is made up of lab work which I love. As a student who struggles with dyslexia, this is obviously great. Not only that, it prepares you for the working world and equips you with the skills you need. In terms of support outside of labs, it has been unbelievably good.

ATU Sligo has smaller class sizes which is great, especially if you are someone coming from a small town or who struggles in crowded environments. You get to know all your class mates and lecturers by name. The lecturers are brilliant and are always there to help with any questions you might have.

The campus has easy access to the city for shopping, places to get coffee or food with your friends, for nights out or to go to the cinema. There are also local bus links to Rosses Point and Strandhill where you can go for an ice cream and a beautiful walk by the sea. There is always something to do! Student accommodation is really affordable too and within walking distance of the campus. This is just another benefit in a long list of reasons to study at ATU Sligo.
