Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choose your course: 

In secondary school I was never the most studied person, I found out in my second year I was dyslexic and had dyspraxia. I thrived in classes that were more practical based, such as art and home-ec. I found it very hard to know what I wanted to do after secondary school. I considered going into science courses as I had a great interest in sports and nutrition. But my learning abilities and strengths lay in practical work. I also considered going into engineering, but I found it was very math and physics-based. My mam came across the course Creative Design in the ATU Sligo prospectus. Creative Design is all continuous assessment & it was the perfect balance of what I wanted. It allowed me to use my strengths such as problem-solving, and art and I was able to apply them to the design projects we were given. 

Tell us why you chose ATU Sligo: 

The course was the selling point for me. 

What do you like about life in Sligo (people, food, accommodation, scenery etc.) 

The students and staff in the college are very friendly and helpful. Sligo has great student nights and great beaches. 

What advice would you give to students thinking about coming to ATU Sligo? 

If this is your first time around and doesn’t know anyone, don’t worry. There are societies for everyone and even if you don’t want to join any you will still find yourself surrounded by friendly and welcoming people willing to give a helping hand. The weather is moderate and there is good transport accessibility, just seize any opportunities to explore the typical Irish lifestyle as well as obtain a wonderful studying experience. 

What specifically about the course do you particularly enjoy: 

For projects, we have to emphasize with the user/customer to create a successful product. It is very important. A lot of research, prototyping & Conceptual thinking is involved. 

What is the best thing about your course that you think new applicants should know: 

Wide range of different projects over the years! You get a feel for all types of design, such as graphic, industrial, product and UX.  

If you were speaking with a first-year student about to start your course, what advice/information would you give them: 

Challenge yourself. Be patient, persistent and trust in the process. 

What are your plans after ATU Sligo and any long term goals you are aiming for: 

I hope to spend the next couple of years gaining experience and learning from others by working on design teams. With my years of experience, I then hope to complete a Masters in Product Design, and to follow this I would like to go into lecturing.
