Admission & General
ATU Sligo offers an excellent student experience. You will study in a modern campus that offers some of the best facilities in the country. On average students would be in a class with 30 or 40 which offers a community feel and huge support from your lectures. We offer the best lecturer to students ratio in Ireland. We have over 70 clubs and societies to choose from and over 30 sports teams at ATU ranging from GAA to Soccer, Rugby to Badminton we have something for everyone.
Going to 3rd level can be quite daunting but don’t worry, we are all here to help ensure you can succeed in your studies. If you get an offer from us, you will get information on induction. This is a day to help introduce you to what you can expect as a student. You will learn about your timetable, how to access computer systems, the library and know where to go for your class.
The timetable differs per course, per year and per semester (e.g. Sept-Dec is Semester 1) You can probably expect to have 20 – 24 hours lecturing time per week at least in year 1 with extra time expected to work on projects and assignments so it means you might have to spend extra time in the library or you could do that work from home.
We hope that ATU Sligo is the right choice for every student. We have the Campus and Supports to make you feel very welcome. Our State of the Art Campus is all located on one site. We are very proud of our Community Feel – with 8500 Full Time Students and the best Lecturer to Student Ratio in Ireland, you are more than just a number to us. Our Support Services are there to help you settle in and help you with any issues you may have. We understand that the transition to college can be a nerve-wracking thought for many. It is totally normal and understandable. Most of these concerns pass very quickly. If they don’t, then we will be there for you.
IT facilities are constantly upgraded in line with a rapidly changing technological world. Our modern learning environment ensures students and staff have the necessary infrastructure to learn the skills needed for today’s work environment. Facilities are fully networked across campus with wireless access provided in all areas. See out IT Services page for more.
There are several courses which do not require Maths. -Business Administration – Early Care & Education – Social Care Practice – English & Psychology – Sociology & Politics – Creative Design – Fine Art – Performing Arts – Writing & Literature. For anybody who struggles with Maths we have a dedicated Maths Support centre. Please do not be put off for applying to a course because of Maths. This innovative and friendly centre offers the supports many students need.
Two alternative independent maths exams (one Honours Level, one Ordinary Level) will be available to sit late August/early September for those who did not get the required Leaving Cert results. They are both 2.5 hour exams to be sat on the ATU Sligo campus. To find out more and register please click here.
St. Angela’s will become part of ATU Sligo, however during this transitional period all information for those interested in what St. Angela’s has to offer can be found at: https://www.nuigalway.ie/stangelas/
Start with what subjects/topics/ideas you like at the moment and this would give you an indication of whether you should be looking at courses in Engineering, Science, Business, Social Science, Law etc. Have you complete any work or work experience in an area that interested you? Have you an interest in a sport or research or both? Think about what you could see yourself doing in the future. Have you ever completed an aptitude test to see where your natural abilities are? Put all this together and look at courses in these areas.
The only courses you will need to definitely have on your CAO application are restricted courses. These are generally courses that require interviews or portfolios. Here at ATU Sligo, our only courses that are restricted are Fine Art. Outside of that you can add any of our courses to your CAO application right up until July 1st. The Free Change of Mind facility will open up on the CAO on May 5th and will be available until July 1st.
CAO points are based on the demand of courses, popular courses will have high points, which has no relation to the quality of the course and is purely related to the number of places available. The CAO points for each course will be published when the first round of offers come out in August. Please check the ATU Sligo website for updates.
This calculator very helpful for calculating your points.
The Careers Service is on hand to help you on every step of your career journey. Once a registered student you have access to our jobs and events platform, Job Teaser. Here you will find hundreds of jobs in Ireland and abroad. We can help you with making choices, finding and securing roles. We advise you to get involved and to always be thinking about building your CV. The careers team also give talks in class about options with different courses.
You can find a list of our Erasmus partners on the international pages of our website. While we have extensive links across Europe, we work closely with a smaller set of colleges in Germany, Spain and France to ensure we can best support your choice of modules to study there. This is of particular importance if choosing a Marketing programme where study abroad is either an integral part of the programme or a very useful adjunct.
The applicants for that course are placed in order of merit. In other words, the applicant with the highest points score (best set of results) is placed at the top of the list and the other applicants are placed in descending order, according to their points score. The applicant with the lowest points score goes to the bottom of the list.
ATU Sligo will instruct the CAO to make a certain number of offers – E.g. If the student was in 20th position for a chosen course, and the Institution instructs CAO to offer 25 places, then the student will receive an offer of a place on that course, unless they have received an offer of a course higher up on their preference list.
Normal closing date for applications is 1st February. A full timetable of important events is available at www.cao.ie. Any updates or important notices can also be found on the same site.
Please contact ATU Sligo on 071 93 05222 or email admissions to discuss this issue.

On most occasions there is a Higher Certificate embedded in the Level 7 programme which allows a learner exit after 2 years. You may notice Higher Cert programmes available at CAO which are the same as the first 2 years of a related Level 7, this would mean the answer is yes. However, I would recommend you check this with Admissions before you finalise your choice.
We also offer courses at Level 7 and Level 6. They are part of what is known as the ladder system – you can progress from the Level 6 (2 Years) to the Level 7 (1 more year) and onto the Level 8 (1 more year) So it’s a total of 4 years that way – the same length as direct entry to Level 8. The degree is exactly the same at the end too.
When you get offered a place, it’s given on the basis of you meeting the CAO points requirement. If you get an offer from a higher listed course in your preferences but you would prefer an offer for a course lower down your list, it’s too late at that stage. You can risk it and decline the higher up offer, but there is no guarantee that points will reduce enough in subsequent rounds to be made an offer for a course lower down your list. It is entirely your choice whether to choose the L8 offer or the L6/L7 offer. Really you should pick the course you truly want to study. Often times, a level 6 or level 7 course is more suitable to an individual than jumping straight into a Level 8 honours degree. You can exit after a Level 6 with a qualification but if you leave an honours degree after two years, you won’t get a qualification at all.
Keep an eye on ATU Sligo’s Vacant Places here.
If a student accepts their offer it does not impact on vacant place application. If they subsequently receive an offer from their vacant place application they can accept that over their first offer. Alternatively if they do not receive an offer from vacant place application or do receive one and do not wish to take it up their original offer still stands. Available places can be found here.
If you get an offer from the CAO you will have an option to defer the course. If you wish to defer an offer of a place you do not accept your offer with the CAO. Instead, you must email the Admissions Office at ATU Sligo. You must give your name as it appears on your CAO application, quote your CAO application number and the course code of the offer you wish to defer, and set out the reason(s) for the request. Applicants must mark “DEFERRED ENTRY” clearly in the subject line of the email. The email must arrive in the Admissions Office of the institution at least two days before the ‘Reply Date’ shown on the Offer Notice. ATU Sligo will communicate to you directly with information on how to proceed to take up your offer for the next academic year.
Mature applicants must apply to the Central Application Office (CAO). See www.cao.ie for more information.
A Mature Student is someone who is aged 23 or older on January 1st of the calendar year of their application to Third Level Education.
Twenty percent of places on each of our courses are held for mature applicants. However, some courses such as Social Care Practice have more mature applications that the places available.
When the CAO makes offers to applicants it provides them with a ten day opportunity to accept.
Acceptances of mature places will be checked and where the 20% of places on any course haven’t been accepted and there is a waiting list for that course, the relevant number of offers will be made to those highest on the waiting list by the CAO. We will continue to monitor acceptances and subsequent offers may be made on our behalf to applicants on the waiting list into September.
Yes, there are 3 levels of scholarship available. The ATU Sligo Sports Scholarship Programme is designed to nurture talented sports people who are prepared to make the commitment to the ATU Sligo sports clubs in their chosen discipline. If successful, you will also have to balance this with your studies. This means that you will be expected to represent ATU Sligo at third level competitions while satisfying academic requirements.
The Sports Scholarship application window will remain open until September 15th. The application is quick and straightforward. You can apply here Each Academic Year up to 60 Sports Scholarships are awarded. Alongside financial support, our Sport Scholars have access to top class Sporting Facilities, Sports Science supports and Academic supports. The Scholarships come at 3 Levels – Gold, Silver and Bronze. Each level has a different financial support attached to it.
The ATU Sligo Online / Flexible Learners Sports Bursary is open for applications from ATU Sligo Students that are not attending full-time programmes on campus, such students include but are not limited to: Apprentices, Work Based Learners, Part-time Students, Online and Flexible Learners.
The Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) is a third level alternative admissions scheme for school leavers whose disabilities have had a negative impact on their second level education. – Click here for more information.
The Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) is a college and university scheme that offers places on reduced points and extra college support to those who are resident in the Republic of Ireland and underrepresented at Higher Education due to their socio-economic background – Click here for more information.
All DARE/HEAR applicants will have to meet minimum academic entry requirements to gain entry to the course of choice. If you have the points required you will be offered a place. In that regard there are no limits to how many DARE applicants we accept per course.
Yes, Dyslexia is recognised for the DARE programme.
You usually find out the end of June (after leaving cert) if you are DARE eligible. It will be the same this year.
You are required to input your PLC results on the CAO when you get them. These are communicated to ATU via CAO website. PLC offers come out through the CAO Round Zero before the leaving certs are offered, so there are no rounds 1 and round 2 etc for you. If you are offered an ATU course, we will send you an offer pack in the post the next day and you have one week to make a decision on the offer.
The minimum entry requirements for a Level 6 or 7 are a Full FETAC Level 5 or 6 and a pass in Maths.
The requirement for a Level 8 course are a Full FETAC Level 5 or 6 with a minimum of 3 distinctions and a pass in Maths. In the case of more popular Level 8 courses i.e., Social Care or Early Childhood Education we always recommend having at least 8 distinctions because of the demand
The Free Fees Initiative pays the tuition fee on behalf of students. The majority of first time third level students qualify for free tuition fees incl. those coming with a PLC. If you qualify for this initiative The Department of Education will automatically pay this fee. ATU knows this when you enrol with us. In order to qualify for free fees you must have been living in an EEA member state or Switzerland for at least 3 of the 5 years before your course starts. Qualifying courses must be full-time, undergraduate and be for a minimum duration of 2 years. For a full list of qualifying requirements visit www.hea.ie regardless what route you took to get to ATU you can still be eligible for SUSI grants When you register with ATU Students who are eligible are required to pay a student contribution charge.
Generally FETAC L6 applicants enter year 1 , however we do accept applications for year 2 and have them assessed by Academic Staff and go with their recommendations. We always recommend them to apply for CAO too in case the year 2 application is rejected .
Yes, you can combine L5 and L6 QQI awards to gain entry to a course as long as it makes up a Major Award.
A list of accepted qualifications and additional requirements is available on the “English Language Requirements” page of the ATU website. English Language Qualifications are only valid if they have been completed within 2 years of the course start date. If you require a visa to study in Ireland, you should also check the English Language requirements of the Irish Immigration Services as these may be different from the institute’s requirements.
Add-on courses refer to one year courses that you can take after completing a level 6 Higher Certificate course or a level 7 course that allow you to progress all the way to an Honours degree. So, for example in business, you can complete a 2 year Higher Certificate, followed by a one year level 7 add-on and then a further one year level 8 add-on. It allows you to progress through the ladder system without committing to a level 8 degree from the outset.
Yes, a student may take a gap year after having been admitted. This is called looking for a Deferral (postponement) of your study. Generally, First year requests for a Deferral aren’t granted for a “gap year”, where this would be travel. However, if the applicant wishes to take time out due to being just 17, or to gain relevant work experience in the area, then a Deferral is granted. You can find more information about this on the CAO Handbook, in the CAO deferrals section. Also, if you have been a student in ATU, and have studied a year or two, you may request a Deferral of a year of study ( to save money, travel, work ). So you have an option, before entering college, and while studying in college, of requesting a Deferral of your study for a year.
Once you have been offered a place on your selected course through the CAO you must accept your course offer on www.cao.ie. You will then receive an information pack through the post from ATU outlining how to register online with us for your course, fee payment information and induction information. The following graphic will also help:
Do not accept the offer via the CAO. Instead, email immediately to admissions@nullitsligo.ie . This email must arrive with us at least two days before the reply date shown on your CAO Offer Notice. To make sure your request is not overlooked, put “Deferral Request” in the subject line. Make sure the email includes:
• Your name
• Your CAO Application number
• The code of the course that you wish to defer
• The reason(s) why you are seeking a deferral.
• A Medical Certificate, where applicable.
Yes. You must show your continued interest by re-applying, via the CAO, the following year. The deferred place must be the only course listed on your reapplication. If you fail to re-apply you will lose your deferred place. If you list additional courses, it is assumed you are no longer certain about the one you deferred and that you have opted to enter a new competition. In this case you will be treated as a new applicant. You may be re-offered the deferred course, or you may not, depending on how your new application goes.
You need to apply through the CAO for the deferred course only, and when you receive the offer defer again.
Yes, students who have deferred their studies do receive their offers before the Leaving Certificate students receive their offers. Offers to deferred students are normally made in early July. They are sent by post, email and SMS text.
You are required to apply for admission to your deferred course only. Applications should be made in the usual way to the Central Applications Office CAO when applications open in November. You should select the course deferred only. If you apply for any other course other than the deferred course your offer will be removed.
Deferred places are offered in Round A, please see the CAO website for offer dates and deadlines.
If you deferred a course you were offered last year, then you are eligible to re-apply as a deferred applicant for that course only. If you apply for any other course then you forfeit your deferred place. We advise that you apply for what you wish to study. Make what you want to study, your first choice. Don’t just apply for what you think you might get. There is no point in studying what you don’t really want.
If you want to cancel a deferral request and you have not accepted your offer through the CAO, you must email Admissions Office at ATU Sligo (admissions@nullitsligo.ie) requesting to cancel your first year deferral. You must give your name as it appears on your CAO application; quote your CAO application number and the course code of the offer you wish to take up.
The email must arrive in the Admissions Office as soon as possible and preferably before classes begin in that academic year. ATU Sligo will communicate their decision to you directly with information on how to proceed to take up your offer. “
On average, our class sizes are 25 – 30, this can slightly vary per course. The small class size allows for interaction with your lectures and the chance to get to know your classmates. We have over 70 Clubs and Societies to choose from at ATU which is great way to help you settle in and meet people. At the start of college an induction programme is open to all first year students.
The majority of lectures will take place between the hours of 9 to 5 from Monday to Friday. However, the amount of lectures per day varies from course to course. Some days will have more lectures. Other days you will have more time off. You will receive your Timetable during Induction.
All first year students attend Induction. This fun filled programme of events will help you settle into college life. During Induction you will get your timetable and Student ID. A Campus tour will help locate the different lecture theatres and classrooms. You will have a chance to talk to your lecturers, learn about the different subjects in your course and meet your new classmates. You will be introduced to all the support services and library facilities available.
Induction depends on your mode of study. Full-time on campus students – your induction usually happens during your first week on campus and will set you up with the information you need to help you through your ATU journey. Online/Part-time/Blended students – you will be given an induction relevant to the course your undertaking, this may be part of the main induction or may be online. However you choose to study, we have the supports in place to support your ATU journey. Also, check the induction section of our website where you will find all our relevant induction information.
Attendance at Induction is preferable and encouraged because students get a chance to meet other first years, get tours of the college and a lot of other valuable information but obviously if somebody cannot make it then there is nothing they can do.
When you are registered as a student, you will be given access to the online learning system Moodle. Here you will see a list of subjects for your course along with any textbooks which may be required.

Alongside this, our lecturers will give you their lecture notes to download. First year students will receive an introduction to the library early in the academic year. It provides access to over 50,000 books in print, as well as a wide range of journals, electronic databases, films, maps, official publications and other resources.

Timetables
All full-time undergraduate teaching and learning activities take place during the designated teaching weeks which are identified in the Academic Calendar and take place on weekdays (Monday to Friday) between 09.00 and 18.00. Online, Part-time and Blended students will have schedules specific to their chosen course. They will be given this at the outset of their studies.
Full-time students can find their timetables by clicking on the “My Timetable” link in the student portal. You can filter by the department you are in and then select your programme from the list. Most Online/Part-time/ Blended timetables can also be found there. All others will receive details on their timetables at the outset of their courses.
If you cannot find your course on the list, first check that you have selected the correct department for your programme. If you are unsure of the department it is best to leave off this filter and search through the list in full. If your course is still not appearing, please contact the Timetabling Office at timetables@nullitsligo.ie
Some classes that may appear as a clash are intentional e.g. most electives are purposely timetabled at the same time. In other instances, there may be more than one tutorial appearing on your timetable but you may only be required to attend one. However, if this is not the case and you have a timetable clash between two subjects you are taking, please flag this to your lecture.
If you are missing a module from your timetable please contact the Timetabling Office.
For the first couple of weeks of each term there may be changes to your timetables as things settle. It is recommended that you check your timetable regularly to avoid missing any updates. It is not recommended to screenshot your timetable as you will miss changes made if working off a screenshot. Instead, save the link to your programme timetable and view the live web version.
You will be assigned to your tutorial group by your Faculty or Programme Coordinator.
To book a room please email roombookings@nullitsligo.ie. Please note that if you are booking for a Club or Society you will be asked to complete a Booking and Event Safety form, room bookings cannot be confirmed until the signed form is returned. Please note that Timetabling do not take bookings on Meeting Rooms. This can be requested via the Faculty Admin.
Room timetables can be viewed at http://timetables.itsligo.ie:81/room.htm. Please ensure that you select the correct week for the date you are looking for.

There are two reasons you may not be able to access your exam results online:
1. You have not paid your fees for the academic year and examinations department has placed a ‘hold’ on your account and therefore you will not be able to access your results until fee payment has been made in full.
2. There may be an IT Services issue. Students are welcome to pop into IT Services helpdesk at any time located in room B1041.
Students may request a review of their examination results after the results have been released. You must use the results feedback days that are shown on the academic calendar to get feedback from your lecturer and to deal with any queries before you submit a request for review. The procedure and form for the request for review are available here.
There is a procedure available through the Examinations section of the student hub.
You register to repeat exams by two methods:
1. Online – here.
2. Email examinations.sligo@nullatu.ie with details of the module you need to be registered to and your student ID.
The results of your exams for conferring(graduation) purposes are given a text description rather than listing the individual module percentages. Please see your student guidebook for a full listing of what these descriptions mean.
