The Lean Sigma Quality MOOC (White Belt) is a free seven-week online course delivered through ATU Sligo’s online learning platform (Moodle). As the course is delivered fully online, there is NO requirement to attend ATU. This award-winning course has been delivered to over 15,000 participants in 50 countries and is brought to you by Ireland’s largest online provider of accredited Quality, Lean Six Sigma and Operational Excellence programmes.
The course will provide you with videos lectures, discussion forums, quizzes and additional resources on Lean Sigma Quality topics. If you reach a minimum grade of 50%, you will be automatically awarded an electronic certificate of Accomplishment (White Belt). The course allows you to learn about Lean Sigma and also gives you a glimpse of what ATU’s award-winning online courses are like.

Course Information
Lean Six Sigma has been around for more than two decades and since then it has been embraced by leading global companies in the manufacturing and service industries. It has become the foremost process improvement approach for organisations that wish to attain world-class performance in quality and customer satisfaction. The tools and techniques are now expanding to the healthcare and government sectors where benefits have been achieved in productivity, efficiency and elimination of ‘waste’ – a term used in Lean Sigma quality which refers to anything that does not add value to the product or service. On this course, the following topics will be addressed:
- Introduction to Lean and the seven ‘wastes’
- Introduction to Six Sigma and the sources of variation in a process – the 5 M’s
- Lean Tools & Techniques
- Flow charts and Value Stream Mapping (VSM)
- Quality Costs
- Quality Metrics – Yield & PPM
- Six Sigma DMAIC problem-solving methodology
- Problem Solving Tools – Fishbone diagram
- Error Proofing (Poka-Yoke)
- Descriptive Statistics
- Introduction to Statistical Process Control (SPC)
- Lean & Six Sigma examples from the Manufacturing, Service and Healthcare sectors.
How will the course be taught?
This course will use the same technology as ATU’s existing award-winning online courses. This course will consist of a series of weekly short recorded lectures as well as extra learning resources that can be accessed online at any time. During the course, you will have access to discussion areas where you can ask questions and get support from your lecturers and fellow participants as you work through the materials. You will be able to take regular quizzes to see how you are progressing.
Will I get certification for completing this course?
If you reach a minimum grade in all the quizzes you will be automatically awarded an electronic Certificate of Accomplishment (White Belt) that you can print or display online on your LinkedIn page. There will be a quiz following each online lecture and your best five out of six quizzes will count towards your final grade. In line with other free (MOOC) courses, there are no college credits assigned to this MOOC.
Do ATU offer other online Lean & OpEx/Six Sigma courses?
Yes, ATU are Ireland’s largest online provider of accredited Quality, Lean Six Sigma and Operational Excellence programmes. We offer the following QQI accredited online courses at Level 7 and Level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).
Lean & Operational Excellence (OpEx) Yellow Belt
The most suitable follow on course from the MOOC is our Lean & OpEx Yellow belt course. This is a one-semester courses (5 credits) at Level 7 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). The ATU Sligo Green and Black Belt courses also cover the Body of Knowledge (BOK) for the American Society for Quality (ASQ) certifications. In addition to your ATU Sligo certificate, you have the option of obtaining an additional ASQ certification by taking the ASQ exam. Fees for the ASQ exam are paid directly to the external provider.
Can I lead a group of employees through this White Belt course?
Yes – many organisations are using this free course to roll out a Lean Six Sigma / OpEx programme to their employees.
